It’s always a good time to plan a trip, and a trip is always a good moment to take a photograph, so where are the best places to both travel and make good use of the camera? Here is Foto Ruta’s pick of top photography destinations for 2016.

1.      The Altiplano- Bolivia

Why it’s on Foto Ruta's top ten photography destinations for 2016: Mesmerizing landscapes where you might find flamingoes, a unique history, colourfully clothed indigenous people, small and remote towns and adventures galore, there’s no arguing that the Altiplano is an A- level photography destination, though you might have to chew on some coca leaves due to the high altitudes to steady your shots!

Best time of the year to travel: During the cold but sunny months between May and October as in the summer it tends to rain a lot, or, for the famous Oruro carnaval in February.

Must visit: Lago Titicaca, Salar de Uyuni, Laguna verde, Laguna colorada.

2.      Iruya, Salta - Argentina

Why it’s on Foto Ruta's top ten photography destinations for 2016: This small Andean town on the border of the province of Salta in Argentina is perched on a cliff and is the perfect location for landscape photography, portraits of beautiful Andean people, and for capturing the texture and melancholy of the quaint stone houses that the town is sprinkled with, so much so, that Guinness shot one of its most expensive commercials ever there!

Best time of the year to travel: At the beginning of autumn in May, or at the beginning of spring in September as the weather is moderate and it is less crowded. In the winter month of August the Pachamama festivities take place.

3.      Havana, Cuba

Why it’s on Foto Ruta's top ten photography destinations for 2016: The turquoise Caribbean Sea and beach life, but also, the colourful Cuban culture and people, colonial architecture and retro style everywhere. 

Best time of the year to travel: All year round although hurricane season is from June to November. The jazz festival and film festival both take place in December.  

Must visit:The Malecón, the El Morro fortress, but also wander away from La Havana to Cienfuegos to catch a sunset at Punta Gorda.

4-     Oaxaca, Mexico

Why it’s on Foto Ruta's top ten photography destinations for 2016: Stunning views and dramatic ruins, special characters, as well as traditional Mexican colour everywhere, markets, and a lot of spice!

Best time of the year to travel: For the Day of the Dead festival on the 31st of October, and on the 1st and 2nd of November, or for the folk dance festival, Gualeguetza, in July.

Must visit: Monte Albán, Xochimilco and Hierve el Agua, and also make sure to take a Mezcal distillery tour!

5-      New Orleans, Louisiana- United States

Why it’s on Foto Ruta's top ten photography destinations for 2016:  Because the combination of Creole culture, French influences, and American lifestyle make it a unique city full of lively people, colour and a lot of live music that ranges from jazz to gospel to new-age rock, just to name a few.  

Best time of the year to travel: From February to May when the Mardi Gras and Jazz Festival take place, and the Spring weather sweetens the skies.

Must visit: The French Quarter, The Garden District and the Mississippi River.

6-      Berlin, Germany

Why it’s on Foto Ruta's top ten photography destinations for 2016: Because it is chock full of art and history, and is full of diverse people and architecture, plus scattered with beautiful parks, skyline views, street art, and more.

Best time of the year to travel: The warm months between spring and autumn as the winter is freezing cold and dark.

Must visit: The Berlin Wall, The Bauhaus Museum, the House of World Cultures, Potsdamer Platz, and Karl Marx Allee.

7-      Burano, Italy

Why it’s on Foto Ruta's top ten photography destinations for 2016:  Anywhere in Italy is a great photography destination, but Burano is particularly charming as it is a small fisherman’s island off the coast of Venice with colorful houses, row boats, quaint gelato stands, delicate lace,  hanging laundry, and of course, lovely Italians.

Best time of the year to travel: Spring or September-November when the weather is still warm but tourist peak season has tempered off a bit.

Must visit: The colorful houses, the lace museum and, the monastery island San Francisco del Desierto which is only a twenty minute rowboat away.

8-      Cadaques, Catalunya, Spain 

Why it’s on Foto Ruta's top ten photography destinations for 2016:  Close to Barcelona, on the Spanish Costa Brava, is this picturesque village which Salvador Dalí and Picasso used to visit. It’s shores, splendid light and stone buildings make it well worth toting the camera.

Best time of the year to travel: early and late summer.

Must visit: Cap da Creus, Port LLigat which is close by, where Dalí had his home.

Best time of the year to travel: early spring when the cherry blossoms blossom, and autumn, when the city is covered in colourful leaves. 

Must visit: The Shibuya District, the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and the Meiji Shrine.
